Abstract
Objective: To study the attitudes and awareness of healthcare professionals (physicians and pharmacists) toward spontaneous reporting system and experience for adverse drug events (ADEs) in Goyangsi, Korea.

Methods: Face-to-face interview was performed using a structured questionnaire involving 612 physicians and 342 pharmacists registered at Korean Medical Association or Korean Pharmaceutical Association in Goyangsi between 15th February 2008 and 21st February 2008.

Results: A total of 219 physicians and 90 pharmacists responded. The overall response rate of this survey was 32.3%. Although 96.1% of the respondents agreed that it is necessary to report ADEs, a much smaller proportion (19.1%) had actually aware of the spontaneous ADE reporting system in Korea. Fifty seven percent of respondents were experienced incidence of ADEs for their patients. However, only 2.3% of healthcare professionals actually submitted a report.

Conclusion: The great majority of healthcare professionals in Goyangsi agreed on the necessity of reporting ADEs. The main reasons for under-reporting were lack of knowledge about ADEs and the spontaneous reporting system. Education and training of healthcare professionals is needed to improve the ADE reporting.
